Product Material and Uses

Ductile Iron Castings & Ductile Cast Iron
If cast iron is subject to a compressive load, these stress points are not particularly detrimental and flake graphite cast iron is excellent under compression. However, tensile loading above the natural tensile strength of the cast iron can cause rapid tensile failure as cracks propagate rapidly out from these stress points. The result of this is that cast iron has virtually no elongation, is a brittle material and is therefore limited in its use in tensile and shock loading applications. For years foundrymen and metallurgists tried to develop a new type of cast iron that would withstand bending and shock loading and would have the characteristics more of malleable cast iron but could be produced at the lower cost of grey cast iron. This resulted in the development of Ductile Cast Iron.
Ductile cast iron is grey cast iron with spherical graphite. It differs from grey cast iron with lamellar graphite in its chemical composition, which, in addition to the basic elements, also contains small quantities of magnesium (from 0.04 to 0.06 %), cerium and rare earths that influence the formation of graphite spheres.
The properties of ductile cast iron do not only depend on the size, number and arrangement of graphite balls in the cast iron, but also on the basic matrix consisting of ferrite and perlite. At the same hardness levels, nodular cast iron has a much higher tensile strength than grey cast iron; toughness and elongation are therefore great advantages of nodular cast iron.
As in the case of grey cast iron, tensile strength and strain define the quality of cast iron. In accordance with the EN-1563 standard, we manufacture ductile cast iron of quality levels 400-7, 400-15, 450-18, 500-14, 600-3, 600-10, and 700-2, as well as cast irons of other quality levels in agreement with customers.

Manganese 0.1 – 0.2%
Magnesium 0.03 – 0.04%
Phosphorus 0.005 – 0.04%
Sulfur 0.005 – 0.02%
Copper <= 0.40%
To improve the strength of ductile iron, additional tin or copper can be added. To improve corrosion resistance, copper, nickel, or chromium can replace anywhere from 15-30% of the iron.
